Some sad news coming in from the music world today. It was announced today that Gerard Smith, bassist for experimental rock group TV On The Radio, died yesterday after a battle with lung cancer, he was 34 years old. The band announced last month that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer, and he would not be able to take part in their upcoming concert tour to promote their latest album, Nine Types of Light, which was just released a couple of weeks ago.
Gerard had been a member of TV On The Radio since 2005, and made his debut with the band on their critically acclaimed effort, 2006's Return To Cookie Mountain. He also appeared on their last studio effort, 2008's Dear Science, which the band spent almost a year promoting with a heavy touring regimen. The band announced in 2009 that they were taking a brief hiatus to decompress from the excessive touring, and would reconvene in the studio next year to begin work on the new disc. The band has announced that they have cancelled all planned tour dates for the rest of the month, and will keep their fans updated on those cancelled dates via their official website.
