Artist Spotlight: New Madrid

Take a break from the warmth with a refreshing dose of Artist Spotlight, brought to us by the fine folks out of Athens, GA known as New Madrid. The band consists of Phil McGill on guitar and lead vocals, Graham Powers on guitar and vocals, Ben Hackett on bass and vocals, and Alex Woolley on drums and vocals. The band has a serene, ethereal calmness to it with a strong emphasis being put on the vocals that are being provided at times by everyone in the group who all get their chance to lend their talents to such a diverse and cutting edge blend of music that is hard to pin down genre wise. One thing that drew me to these guys was their free wheeling and laid back personalities that hearken back to the late 60's-early 70's era where music had no boundaries and artists were free to dabble in experimentation and let the songs communicate with the people. These guys definitely have a certain likability to them, and their music is fantastic when you really get down to the nitty gritty of it and showcases their true colors as human beings as well. Some songs you'll enjoy from them include "Magnetoception" and "Country Moon Pt. 1".

For more info on the boys in New Madrid, give them a well deserved 'Like' on Facebook right over here where the guys are sure to be waiting for you with open arms. The guys are on Twitter as well from this locale here and see when they may be coming up to Boston again sometime in the near future. Their official website over here has more in depth info regarding their tunes, and check out their latest album titled "Sunswimmer", now available for download on iTunes conveniently located right here.

Artist Spotlight: Wild Child

Kicking off the week with a brand new installment of Artist Spotlight, this time taking us to the heart of the music festivals in Austin, TX where we come across the folk infused sounds of Wild Child. The band consists of Alexander Beggins on lead vocals and bantone ukulele, Kelsey Wilson on lead vocals and violin, Evan Magers on keyboard, Drew Brunetti on drums, Sadie Wolfe on cello, Chris D'Annuzio on bass, and James Bookert on banjo. The band has an incredibly pure and unadulterated folk sounds, with elements of Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros rising to the surface and balancing everything out especially the ukulele at hand here. I was pleased with what the band had to offer musically, and they really nailed it in terms of sheer musicality with their abilities never in question and off and running right away. It's great to hear acts that bring about a sense of free wheeling thinking not seen since the late 60's and early 70's, where acts ranging from Jefferson Airplane and The Mamas and The Papas were trying new elements to sound fresh and reinvented, and these guys bring about that same aesthetic that those same acts applied back then, but apply it to today's musical climate. A terrific group that is definitely gaining some ground in the scene right now. Some tracks for you to check out include "Anna Maria" and "Rillo Talk".

For more info on Wild Child, give them a 'Like' on Facebook over here and see what they're all about musically and draw your own conclusions from what you hear. Artist Spotlight: Real Friends

Closing out the week and cruising into the weekend with an all new Artist Spotlight, where we jet on over to Tinley Park, IL where we encounter the vivacious pop-punk sounds of Real Friends. The band consists of Kyle Fasel on bass, Dave Knox on guitar, Dan Lambton on lead vocals, Brian Blake on drums, and Eric Haines on guitar. The band has an intense, driven pop-punk sound with influences ranging from Jimmy Eat World with a strong emphasis being put on melody and emotion that will definitely draw the masses to their sound, which is a genre of music that has been high in demand for quite some time and these guys are quickly spearheading the movement with their pure and unfiltered sound. I had a blast listening to these guys, and it sort of takes me back to my high school years which of course was the basis for alot of the music I listen to today, and gives me an immediate rush every time I hear it and makes me feel younger in a way as it allows me to relate to some of the lyrics and connect with a younger audience that allows me to see a little bit of myself in each and every one of them and makes me feel chuffed and glad that pop-punk is having a positive impact on today's youth. A terrific up and coming band primed for the big show. Some recommended tracks for you to check out include "Late Nights In My Car" and "Skin Deep".

For more info on Real Friends, check them out on Facebook over here and give them a 'Like' so you can stay in touch with the guys on a musical level. Artist Spotlight: Turnover

Today's edition of Artist Spotlight takes us down to Virginia Beach, VA and upon the doorsteps of the emo-punkers known as Turnover. The band consists of Casey Getz, Danny Dempsey, Eric Soucy, and Austin Getz. The band has a simple and straightforward sound, but the real power lies in their lyrics where the songs come to life through extremely well written verses and superb vocals that set everything in motion right away and settle you in pretty quickly. I wasn't sure what to expect from these guys as I never heard of them before, but I was quickly debriefed on their sound and found that the guys had their own style and musical image to convey to their audience, and weren't being bound by genres or musical stereotypes that would have otherwise set them back. A fantastic up and coming band that has a diamond in the rough characteristic to them that you'll like. Recommended songs for listening include "I Would Hate You If I Could" and "Most of The Time".

For more info about the guys in Turnover, head on over to their Facebook page located here and give it a quick 'Like' to show your appreciation for everything it is that they do. Artist Spotlight: Twin Forks

Today for Artist Spotlight, we head down to Boca Raton, FL where we come across the folk infused sounds of Twin Forks. The band consists of Suzie Zeldin, Jonathan Clark, Ben Homola, Shawn Zorn, Kelsie Baron, Kimmy Baron, and Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional fame. The music is a vivacious, organic experience with thoughtful folk precision and is a reflection of their Southern upbringing that flows naturally through their music and is totally honest and refreshing to hear blasting through the speakers. It also represents a huge shift for Chris Carrabba, who helmed Dashboard Confessional for many years which was aimed at a more younger audience with its extremely well written lyrics inspiring slews of people. While this type of music is markedly different from that, it represents a huge growth both personally and professionally for Chris who is heading into the next phase of his life with a sense of security and enlightenment for what is to lay ahead and bring with him a whole new audience and some long time supporters in the process who will greatly appreciate the new music and lyrical insight that they have always come to expect from Chris. A terrific group that has their own organic and unique sound. Some tracks for you to check out include "Back to You" and "Hard Times".

Artist Spotlight: Mission Transmission

Kicking off the month of June with a brand new edition of Artist Spotlight, and this takes us down to Hartford, CT and upon the explosive and powerful sounds of Mission Transmission. The band consists of Adam Lyman, Brian Dunnigan, Richard Stone, Seth Michalek, and Mike Morin. The band has an impeccable, highly melodic sound similar to the likes of Yellowcard and Story of The Year that strikes a fine balance between high energy pop-punk while throwing in some slightly harder and abrasive musical elements that gives them a great deal of diversity and a strong and structured lyricism that speaks clearly to their supportive and ever growing fanbase. I saw these guys in concert this past Saturday at PA's Lounge and I must say they were a revelation for me and I'm glad I stayed around to catch these guys because I could tell there was something special about these guys and what transpired on stage was nothing short of amazing. The band also threw in some covers to go along with their originals including Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn" and the song that defined my high school years, The Starting Line's "Best of Me" that sealed the deal for me and really opened my eyes to a supremely talented band that more than deserves to move higher up the musical echelon. A terrific act that needs to be heard immediately! Some recommended tracks for you to unearth include "One of The Lucky Ones" and "Burning The City Down".

I found these guys on Audiotree, which is an excellent source for live performances from up and coming bands, and I really loved their approach to creating their music and loved how they kept in tune with each other while performing, something that is a essential cornerstone for any band to master the art of, and these guys definitely have some enjoyable characteristics to them that flourish and bubble up to the surface when you first listen to them. A terrific on the rise act that is definitely worthy of checking out. Some tracks for you to check out include "Golden Hour" and "Shapeshifters".

Artist Spotlight: LeoLeo

Time for another edition of Artist Spotlight where we come across some local Boston flavor with the sounds of LeoLeo. The duo consists of Vanessa Wheeler on songs, vocals, guitar, and bass, and Sarah Hope on drums, synth, and electronics. The group has a sharply focused and dynamic musical approach with influences such as Tegan and Sara with elements of indie rock and subtle electronic arrangements thrown in for good measure to balance the sound out and create a flourishing musical environment where they both let it all out and do their own thing. I had the opportunity to catch them in concert last night at Great Scott where they were opening up for Tales of Olde, and they really caught on to me in terms of their stage presence where they openly threw themselves out there and expressed their sound to a rapturous audience who caught on to every note and word they were articulating through the power of music, and they really have found their place among the other bands in the local Boston scene. A track for you to check out from them is "Dancing Queen".

Artist Spotlight: Trash Boat

Starting off your week with a refreshing dose of Artist Spotlight, this time coming to you from across the pond in Herts, United Kingdom where we bring to you the vibrant and eclectic sounds of Trash Boat. The band consists of Tobi on lead vocals, Oakley on drums, Dann on guitar, Ryan on guitar, and James on bass. The sound is a refreshing and dynamic concoction of standard issue pop-punk rhythms inspired by the likes of The Starting Line and New Found Glory with a straightforward and linear approach taken to the tracks that puts them in a class all their own and helps the lovely lads develop their own distinct musical personas as well. I was floored when I first heard these guys, and was really impressed with their musical abilities that took them above and beyond the scope of the imagination. It also speaks to mind about the musical maturity they've displayed in such a short span of time and the high quality of music coming from merry old England, which I've covered to a great extent here on the site and continues to floor me each and every time. A terrific upstart British band that I have high hopes for moving forward. A track for you to check out from them is called "Boneless".

I found a great deal to love from these gentlemen and their ability to keep their audience on their toes and in the moment with upbeat positivity sure to be the star of the show. These guys played at TT the Bear's last Saturday and unfortunately I missed their set due to heavy traffic getting to the venue, but I managed to interact with one of the guys afterwards who handed me a CD and really appreciated his earnest effort of him going around and promoting his band to everyone in the audience, which is not an easy thing to do and shows the dedication that they exude to their craft. A terrific upstart band deserving of some exposure here on the site. Some tracks for you to check out include "Stolen" and "Pile of Bones".

I had an enjoyable time listening to these guys, and really appreciated what these guys were aiming for when they were conjuring up these tunes while in the studio. These three guys plain love being together while criss-crossing the country and exposing their sound to a receptive audience who will definitely appreciate the message that comes across during the course of their listening. What I loved about these guys was their sheer musical ability and focus, plus their raw and unadulterated sound that didn't feel the need to succumb to any musical gimmicks or shortfalls that showed they had an understanding of the music they were creating and the audience that they wanted to focus on. Starting off your Tuesday and another week of Artist Spotlight with a band splitting its time between Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio that goes by the name of Citizen. The band consists of Mat Kerekes on lead vocals, Nick Hamm on guitar, Jake Duhaime on drums, Ryland Oehlers on guitar, and Eric Hamm on bass. The band sound is an intense, youthful pop-punk dynamic with a heavy emphasis being put on melody to get a stranglehold on the listener right away and take them in right away to introduce their sound to a fanbase that has a veracious appetite for all things music. I thoroughly enjoyed my listening experience with these gentlemen, and really appreciated how they kept things on a level playing field with their intense guitar riffs and extremely well written lyrics being the highlights of a band that is well on their way to achieving a great deal of success around here and across the pond as well. A terrific upstart act that is definitely worthy of some plays in your iTunes library. Some songs to check out for yourself include "Young States" and "I Still Shut My Eyes".

Artist Spotlight: Donovan Wolfington

For Friday's edition of Artist Spotlight heading into the weekend, we head down to the land of Mardi Gras known as New Orleans, LA where we come across the vibrant and diverse sounds of Donovan Wolfington. The band consists of Neil Berthier on guitar and lead vocals, Matthew Seferian on guitar and vocals, Savannah Saxton on keys and vocals, Chris Lanthier on bass, and Michael Saladis on drums. The band sound is a mixture of about half a dozen different genres where the sound can't possibly be pinned down to one specific location, but runs the gamut from grunge to punk to everything in between with a sharply driven musical focus run amok that is destined to illicit a positive reaction from the audience who will genuinely appreciate the band's creativity and style much like I did. These guys are absolutely brilliant to say the least, and I love how the group has a unique style and image where they just throw everything out there, much like they do in the photo above where all the members strip down to their underwear showing some skin and look mighty fine at doing it. A terrific band with an extremely bad ass name that is well worth your listening time.

For more info on Donovan Wolfington, head on over to their Facebook page located right here and give it a 'Like' so that you can stay in the know of everything happening in the band's world. Artist Spotlight: Neck Deep

Artist Spotlight is ready to go for today, and we jump across the pond to Wrexham, United Kingdom where we stmble upon the finely tuned pop-punk sounds of Neck Deep. The band consists of Ben Barlow on lead vocals, Lloyd Roberts on guitar, Matt West on guitar, Fil Thorpe-Evans on bass, and Dani Washington on drums. The band's sound is chock full of effervescent pop-punk rhythms and is mostly reminiscent of all the bands I grew up listening to in high school such as The Starting Line and New Found Glory, and those influences bubble up to the surface prominently and the overall sound is first rate and really touches upon you emotionally the moment you first hear it. There is almost nothing not to like about this band, and they've been a huge commodity over in England and they deserve a boatload of success here in the States where their sound will resonate strongly with its listeners just as it has over in their native land. Some songs for you to check out from them include "Crushing Grief (No Remedy)" and "Up In Smoke".

Starting off your Tuesday with another edition of Artist Spotlight that takes us down to Hamden, CT and upon the doorsteps of Wolves At Bay. The band consists of Will Hayes on guitar and lead vocals, Eric Gustafson on guitar, Chris Noel on drums, and Mat Smith on bass. The band has a eclectic indie-emo rock feel with elements of Brand New well represented throughout the musical tree that presents a two-tiered effect that gives the best of both worlds with cutting edge instrumentation and sharp edged vocal work that gives the songs focus and a musical identity that fans can relate to and allow the two parties to share some insight between one another as well. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to these guys, and found the direct connection they had with their fans that is essential to the success of any group and is a barometer of sorts as to how the guys measure up to the other acts currently embedded within the scene. A terrific upstart band with plenty of potential for growth in the future. Some recommended tracks for you to discover include "Know Why" and "I Have Nothing To Offer".
