BREAKING NEWS!! R.E.M. Break Up!

Hey everyone,

Some unexpected news that came into the music world earlier this afternoon. In a shocker, it was announced that after a 31 year run, R.E.M. would be calling it quits effective immediately. The band issued a statement earlier this afternoon via their official website:

"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." R.E.M.

The band just released their latest album, Collapse Into Now this past year and was met with strong critical acclaim from the music press. The band have released a string of numerous albums and tracks that have defined the essence of the alternative genre including "Radio Free Europe" "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?" "Losing My Religion" and "It's The End Of The World (As We Know It)" just to name a few. Michael Stipe added this to say to their fans following the initial announcement:

"A wise man once said--'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave.' We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it.

"I hope our fans realize this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way.

"We have to thank all the people who helped us be R.E.M. for these 31 years; our deepest gratitude to those who allowed us to do this. It's been amazing."

The band will be releasing a career spanning greatest hits collection in November. Leave your comments on this story right here on the blog!
