Detroit Tigers Player Music Selections

Continuing my Spring Training special with a look at the music selections of last year's AL Central champ, the Detroit Tigers. The boys from Motown have been on a roll the last 3 seasons, making back-to-back-to-back appearances in the ALCS, but fell a little short last year to the eventual World Series champion Boston Red Sox. The team is locked and loaded this year, despite the loss of Prince Fielder to the Rangers, they still have the best hitter on the planet in Miguel Cabrera, and two of the top pitchers in baseball with Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer. I've managed to compile a list of the player's musical selections that they'll be moving and grooving to all season long while at the confines of Comerica Park. Here is the list:

Alex Avila: The Black Keys - I Got Mine

The sure handed backstop has the pride of Akron, OH in his walk up song choice with this slick track from The Black Keys. The catcher survived a memorable collision in last year's ALCS, but he's fully recovered and rearing to go with this track that will allow him to focus on the only task at hand, which is delivering a clutch hit when needed, and getting on base to ensure the offense stays alive in the later innings.

Andy Dirks: Gary Allan - Get Off On The Pain

Left field is manned by this Kansas native who pays homage to this country roots with this down home track. Andy comes through in the clutch when depended on, and while he doesn't have eye popping numbers like some of his teammates, he has a strong glove and mans left field exceptionally well, giving his team a chance to hold onto the lead and secure the victory when all is said and done.

Anibal Sanchez: LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem

This massive summer hit from 3 years ago is the walk up song for this fireball throwing Venezuelan. This guy was a tough out in last year's World Series, with a no hitter in his midst every time he walks out onto the mound, and sports a mind boggling arsenal that can make hitters look plain foolish at the plate and leave the offense sputtering before you even know it.

Austin Jackson: Wale - Ambition

The center field has this stylish hip-hop track as his personal walk up song. Austin has been a mainstay in Detroit for a few years now, and can be depended on with his broad range preventing those flyballs from getting out of the ballpark and robbing the occasional home run or two that may drift too far out beyond the warning track.

Jose Iglesias: The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army

This scorching hot Cuban phenom has some excellent music taste with this mainstay from Jack & Meg White. He was traded from the Red Sox last summer before the deadline and is sorely missed in Boston with his eye popping defense keeping balls out of the outfield, and his clutch hits and super fast speed turning him into one of the premiere shortstops in the game right now.

Justin Verlander: Eminem - Till I Collapse

Also known as the greatest pitcher in the history of Planet Earth, Verlander has this Detroit native Eminem as his entrance music. Justin is known for racking up strikeouts galore in his deep outings at the park that can go the whole nine innings if he wanted to, and has eye popping speed that reaches upwards of 95mph and is one of the toughest pitchers to figure out, leaving batters constantly shaking their heads in the long path back to the dugout.

Max Scherzer: Dr. Dre f/ Eminem - Forgot About Dre

This phenomenal pitcher with a freaky different colored eye set has this classic hip-hop track from Dre's "2001" album. Possessing alot of the same traits as Verlander mechanics wise, Max can dominate right from the start and not let up a hit for half of the game, much like he did last year in the ALDS against Oakland. With a superior pitch selection, Scherzer proves time and time again when he steps out on the mound that he is among one of the most feared pitchers in all of baseball.

Miguel Cabrera: Kanye West - Mercy

Also known as the greatest hitter on the planet, Miguel or also known as Miggy to his teammates has this recent Kanye West track as his entrance music. Winning the Triple Crown just two years ago, Miguel continues to put up numbers that jump off the stat sheet when you look at them, and continues to hit balls in ballparks all across the country where they've never been hit before, and he will make you throw every pitch you know before he eventually makes you give it up in the end.

This Tigers ballclub looks locked and loaded headed into this season, and despite the losses of Prince Fielder and Doug Fister, the team still possesses a top notch offense and stellar defense that makes them one of the favorites in the division and the league as well. You can bet on a 4th consecutive trip to the ALCS for the boys of Motown this year.

Artist Spotlight: whysowhite

Bringing to you another platter of Artist Spotlight! Today, we jet on over to Chicago where we come across the funk infused sounds of whysowhite. The group consists of Big Fat Nick on vocals, MC, and percussion, Charlie Moonbeam on vocals and MC, D-Pop Fantastic on vocals, dance, and congas, Dngr Miller on guitar, Suga Sean Candy Carolan on bass, and Brahmz on drums. The band has an highly enthusiastic funk sound similar to Sly & The Family Stone with its electric stage presence jumping right in front of you, giving you a truly bombastic listening experience unlike no other. I caught their recent performance on Audiotree, and I was enthused with what they had to offer musically, and was impressed with the band's brilliant hooks and dazzling melodies working their way into my collective consciousness almost immediately, and leaving an indelible impression in the process. An amazingly talented group that is working their way up the musical rungs on the ladder. Some recommended tracks to take a listen at include "The Approach" and "Exhale".

For more info on the fellas in whysowhite, move on over to their Facebook page right here and 'Like' it to see what they have to offer you on their musical menu. The band can be followed on Twitter from this locale here and see when they'll be making their way to the Boston area sometime soon. Interview w/ Emmett and Kat from Sugar Bomb

Have another interview to add to my ever growing collection of past Artist Spotlight alumni! Today, we sit down with Emmett Ceglia and Kat Hamilton, drummer and frontwoman respectively for the Boston based band called Sugar Bomb. The band is currently living in Brooklyn right now, but the members all attended Berklee College of Music where they got their schooling in how to properly master the musical art and properly articulate their musical message to the crowd, which has so far being received quite well. The two were nice enough to sit down and chat on how the band first got started, where they plan on going forward, and why Emmett loves taking off his shirt so much while up on stage. Here is the transcript from our little chat:

Give us your names and your positions in the band?

My name is Emmett Ceglia, and I am the drummer and co-founder of Sugar Bomb!. Moreover, I am equally Kat's right hand man and devil's advocate, constantly challenging what the band is and pushing the envelope. We're not really similar at all but that constant compromise between us makes us a tremendous duo; if Kat's the Sugar, then I am the Bomb!, exclamation point and all.

My name is Kat Hamilton, and I am the co-founder and front woman of Sugar Bomb! I also write the songs, although we have been co-writing a lot lately.  Since the first album is about my life, I guess I would say I am also the center of the band. I am the pink pants behind the operation ;)

How did you guys meet and when did the band form?

Emmett: This band's history is insane. It has enough characters to cast its own broadway production, and so being Kat and I debate the exact timeline all the time, I won't involve too many precise dates.

She and I met at Berklee's Slam Poetry Club, and I truly found her annoying. Holy hell. However, after getting to know each other through the crucible that is Slam, we found we both had at least one common interest, Pop-Punk, and after that, Kat invited me to rehearse with a band she was apparently putting together. I was skeptical, but I bleed Pop-Punk so that reason alone was enough for me to give it a shot.
It was a bit of a train wreck. There were 6 people in that room, including a violin, and that day ended up being the only time we'd get together at all. And with that, I figured Sugar Bomb! was just another extinct experiment, a fun one with possibilities, but really not anything more.
An entire year went by until Kat approached me again about restarting this band. Thankfully, whatever we threw at the wall started sticking, and we had Sugar Bomb! 2.0 on our hands. We paired things down to just four members, and strung it together just tightly enough to put together an EP. Things started to wash out on us again pretty much right after I'd recorded my drum tracks, but at least we had something to shop around. The two of us were pretty lukewarm on the whole thing, but people actually liked it! Finally, we had some ground to run on and a direction to run in, and with that behind us, Sugar Bomb! was actually given the chance to grow into what we have now.

Kat: So, I approached him about being my drummer because, to be honest, he seemed like the first person who took me seriously. All I had were a couple of poorly drawn out lead sheets for Meteor Shower and Under Your Spell (which are both on our upcoming album) Also, at that time I had also had a reputation at Berklee for being a bit of a joke. I don’t think people thought I would end up actually graduating, so when I started recruiting people for the “Kat Hamilton Band”, I think they assumed it would be a massive fail. Funny enough, the first ever “Sugar Bomb! Rehearsal” was for all intensive purposes, a massive fail! We played with any person who said they would do it and I spend the majority of that rehearsal underprepared, frazzled with no direction. We stopped for a while until the beginning of 2012 or so when I asked Emmett to revisit the project. We recorded the E.P, which made me force myself book our first show in our school cafeteria. For as much as Emmett and I bicker like an old married couple, I will always respect him for jumping on board this crazy train. After the E.P it only became more apparent that this was not just the “Kat Hamilton Band”, but that Emmett and I were a team. Since, we have had endless lineup changes, but we consider Marshall Biever as well as Tom Shani, to be our core lineup. We still chat with those two all the time!

What is the origin of the name 'Sugar Bomb!' for your band?

Emmett: I don't know where it came from originally, somewhere deep in the sticky pink mess of Kat's brain I suppose. We debated the name for quite some time; however, it does sum up what we are the best without giving it all away or having some part of the female anatomy involved.

Kat: As I recall, I was having dinner with my mentor, Caroline, and our friends James and Sarah with the name first came up. Someone at the dinner called me a Sugar Bomb, referencing my intense and often abrasive, but sweet personality, and the name just lodged itself in the back of my mind.

At first the name, to me, represented the music. Sweet and sour, dark and positive, a Sugar Bomb! is the juxtaposition of opposing ideas. Just like Emmett and I, LOL. After he came in the picture, our dynamic was the Sugar Bomb.

Describe your sound to those who may not be too familiar with you guys?

Emmett: It's like the 80's, Nirvana, and Green Day all got together in a blender and had a chopped-up-body-fluids pool party.

Kat: I’d say it’s a little No Doubt, A little bit Runaways, and The Distillers “Coral Fang” had a huge impact on how I wanted the record to sound. Lots of girl power!

Who are some of your musical inspirations from a young age?

Emmett: It depends on how young we're talking, because that can of worms could include Kindergarten, and I'm not about to reveal Backstreet Boys in public...oh wait... My general approach to drumming comes from always wanting to be like my favorite drummer, Tre Cool of Green Day, who is also my favorite band. From there though, things get strange seeing as I'm really not a fan of radio-Pop music at all. Although, I did always dream of crashing the party and fucking shit up, so I guess that's what I'm doing here.

Kat: Stevie Nicks, was a big one. I used to put on a silk robe and twirl around my room to dreams. I also loved Bikini Kill, Green Day, The Ramones and the Sex Pistols. Nirvana also had a huge impact on me, especially Nevermind. I can be very old school!

How do your individual personalities contribute to the success of the band?

Emmett: Like I mentioned earlier, it's the fairly stark contrast between Kat and I that drives things along. In a musical sense, she's trying to make things more welcoming for the audience, and not that they don't matter, but I say fuck the audience, let's get as crazy as we can. The music benefits by being both listenable on surface level as well as a more detailed one: the audience gets to engage how they wish and we get to go ham and engage ourselves as musicians. Bottom line with Sugar Bomb!, everyone gets the chance to win.

Kat: Emmett and I are the definition of polar opposites, but it makes the band dynamic very intriguing. He’s Blunt, Opinionated, and very Hardcore. I’m sort of Dreamy, Hyper and I can be a bit of an airhead in a good way!
The music is a marriage of those qualities. I actually joke all the time about how Emmett is my platonic husband, since I don't really swing that way.
Many of our previous band members personalities color the music as well. Marshall is this kind, optimistic and jolly, ray of light. Tom was the master of funky and laid back. Joe, resembled a kid on a candy bender on stage. I'm really excited to see what how the new kids influence the music.

I also bring a lot of my pop influence to the table. The songs are all essentially pop songs, that we then fuck up with a sledgehammer.

Now Emmett, you have a reputation for being the shirtless one, how did that all start and how does performing without a shirt make you feel?

It's a reputation I enjoy! I do it because drumming, at the least the way I'm doing it, is an athletic event, and so I sweat quite a bit, usually until glistening. I've been taking it off since high school, so the better part of my career actually. A wet shirt is restricting, so I take it off and bam!, problem solved - I get to be the free flailing maniac I always imagine I am. Any other positive outcomes are purely icing on the cake, but I love them all the same because let's be honest with ourselves, cake without icing sucks, hard.

For fun, what do you guys like to do away from the stage, any fun activities/adventures?

Emmett: I enjoy fantasizing about changing the country as a future president, cooking, watching educational YouTube and anime, fantasizing about owing a hedgehog, kayaking, hugging, stand-up comedying, and supporting women's emotional needs.

Kat: My answer will probably sound like dating profile. I love to cook and drink beer, my brother and sister are both chefs so I hold little iron chef competitions, with myself. I’m obsessed with the television show, My so called life. I also love to exercise: Running, Dancing, Jumping, Prancing, Competitive Chatting. Otherwise I spend a lot of time panicking about the future, for fun.

What's coming up next for the band, any shows coming in the near future to the Boston area?

Emmett: Up next is our first show in six months, finally! We'll be playing at Arlene's Grocery onMarch 4th. We also have a new guitarist and bassist finally!! You'll all get to meet them very soon. They're adorable. Then our second single "Kiss Me" and it's subsequent music video will be arriving, so stay tuned for a four minute make out session. In April we're finally playing with our fellow Brooklyn Pop-Punk/Emo companions in Sulene.
Lastly, our debut album, "Sugar Bomb!," is due out before the summer FINALLY!!! There's quite a bit of "finally" with this band. That puppy's been on quite a journey, so we're excited (relieved really) to get it out into the world.
As far as Boston goes, I have no idea when we'll be back there. Hopefully before the year's out. It's where it all began, and we have so many friends still living there so what better excuse to go see them?

Kat: I’m hoping we will hold a CD release there. But we are trying to find a venue that will let us bring pie ;)

Lastly, what is the one thing you'd like everyone to know about your band?

Emmett: Trigger Warning: we've got a lot of feelings to share. We hope we can have mutually beneficial and consensual feelings intercourse with all of you.

Kat: That we love what we do, each other and you. And that you should come to our show at Arlenes Grocery. March 4th!

Thanks once again to Emmett and Kat for being so awesome and gracious with their time in doing this interview! They both have a clear artistic vision of where they want their music to go, and I could tell from first listen that they have the necessary components to make it, they just need to catch their big break which is not too far away. For more on their music, 'Like' them on Facebook here and follow them on Twitter here, and don't forget to catch their performance at Arlene's Grocery in NYC on March 4th if you live there or plan to make a road trip there.

Brett Steinberg - Until We See The Sun

CT based singer-songwriter Brett Steinberg has his sophomore album on deck titled Until We See The Sun. The collection is a warm mixture of thoughtful lyrical arrangements and strong instrumentation that brings the songs to life and gives them an identity and focus like no other.

We kick things off with "Not Turning Back", a simple yet majestic arrangement with Brett's vocals opening the floodgates with passion and an enthusiasm for the power of music that has a strong sincerity to it that you can't ignore. "Saturday Night" is an upbeat, positively minded song that shows the diversity that Brett is capable of displaying, and hints at his capabilities as a singer-songwriter with an ability to dabble in other tempos that makes him a longer lasting musician in the process as well. My favorite song off the album is "Gone By Daylight (She Is)" a strong, echoing track that best highlight's Brett's musical resolve with his lyrical story showcasing the themes that run rampant throughout the album such as love and heartbreak that are mainstays within the genre, but Brett does it in a way that is sincere and heartwarming and gives it a voice like no other track can. "Made Me Feel Alive" tones it down a couple of notches with a simple piano arrangement and Brett's vocals reading like a whisper that travels throughout the musical confines of the track with ease and comfort. "For You" kicks it up slightly a notch with more emphasis being put on the piano track that gives it a hook and line, and puts us in the proper frame of mind as we head into the second half of the album.

"Come Back Home" reads like a greeting card with Brett's heartwarming vocals reeking of sincerity and presenting Brett's undying musical quest that is proving its resolve right in front of you as we speak. "In Control" makes clever use of the piano with some more upbeat melodies working its way into the musical foundation of the track and giving it some diversity and color that will keep listeners tuned in and focused. "Hopeful Wanderers" is a short and sweet track clocking in at close to 1 minute and 45 seconds that features a gorgeous piano melody that has a symphonic nature to it that echoes the untold beauty of this album that is just waiting to be unraveled right here and now. The disc gets ready to close out with "Come Clear", a climatic, finished piece with Brett's vocals once again working their magic and making elegant use of the piano that reads like a second voice acting in collaboration with Brett as the disc starts to fade to black. "We'll Be Okay" concludes matters here with a track that brings in all the elements we've heard in some way, shape, or form together on one stage and brings about a musical symphony of sorts that shows all the musical colors and shapes that we've met in our journey here to the end.

In retrospect, a terrific and succinct effort from Brett Steinberg, who has made an impression on his listeners with an effort that speaks to mind about his musical gifts that he has to offer to his audience who are willing and able to hear what he has to say.

Neil Young Is The Most Distinctive Artist in MA

It appears that Neil Young is the most favorite musical artist in Massachusetts, according to a recent study done by The Echo Nest. Based right here in Somerville, MA this state of the art music intelligence platform is used by companies such as Rdio, Spotify, and MTV to gauge what the American public likes to listen to. By taking this information, they can draw a cross section across the entire country and find the favorite bands of each state and curate a map that accurately displays their findings.

For more information on this groundbreaking study, head on over to Paul Lamere's blog called Music Machinery right here that displays his findings even further in detail.

Artist Spotlight: The Pines

Kicking off the week right with an all new edition of Artist Spotlight! Today, we head over to the land of the Twin Cities, Minneapolis, MN where we come across the folk infused sounds of The Pines. The band consists of David Huckfelt, Benson Ramsey w/ J.T. Bates, James Buckley, Alex Ramsey, Michael Rossetto, and Jacob Hanson. The band has its roots originally from Moonrise, Iowa but they bring their sensibilities that they've obtained from their homeland to make them a natural force of nature with their sound most reminiscent of Fleet Foxes that has an ethereal and mystical nature kicking in almost instantly from the first note, and continues to evolve and gradually digs deeper as the music gets even more profound. I was amazed with the emotional connection that I obtained when listening to these guys, and was really pleased that they maintained their originality from the Landlover State and melded in almost instantaneously when they arrived in Minneapolis, something that is hard to do but the group make it look easy with their hard fought musicality taking its hold on the land around them and settling in quite nicely with the cold weather and kind nature of the people around them. A terrific upstart act that is worth a pass over here on the site. Some tracks to keep on top of include "Rise Up and Be Lonely" and "All the While".

For more info on the gentlemen in The Pines, sail on over to their Facebook page right here and 'Like' it if you enjoy immensely what you hear. The band is available to be followed on Twitter from over here and see if the band will be making a stop in the Boston area anytime soon. Visit their official website at this link here for more in depth information concerning them, and it's where you can check out all of their music that they've released up until this point.

This Much Release Music Video For "Disdain"

Allston's own This Much have just released their brand new music video for the song titled "Disdain". The video is a stark reminder that winter is still upon us with its wrath of cold firmly entrenched in our minds and its winds in our constant grasp almost every day. However, there is a certain beauty to winter that can be appreciated with its breathtaking imagery that is omnipresent in the video, and gives us a glimpse into the happenings of what's going on in our everyday lives as we make do with what we have despite the elements outside. A terrific vidco that really puts the sounds and images of the season into full perspective here.

If you want to hear "Disdain" for yourself, it will be released to most major digital music providers next Tuesday, March 4th so keep an eye out until then, and we'll keep you posted about its availability right here on the site as well.

Interview w/ Jared Carrabis of SoxSpace

With baseball season creeping up just around the corner, I'll be doing some interviews over the next couple of weeks with some sports insiders as the beginning of the season come closer. Today, we do an interview with Jared Carrabis, founder and editor in chief of SoxSpace. If you're not familiar with SoxSpace, it's the most indepth source of information about the World Champion Boston Red Sox on the planet, with Jared's immense likability and humor injected into every single article that portrays stories better than they do on the afternoon sports talk radio shows. Jared took some time out of his increasingly busy schedule as SoxSpace returned after a brief hiatus to talk about the site's beginnings, his thoughts about the Red Sox going into this year, and a few music related questions thrown in for good measure. Here is the transcript from our chat:

Give us your name and your role at Soxspace?

My name is Jared Carrabis, and I am the founder and Editor-in-Chief at SoxSpace. I’m in charge of all of the content that goes on the site, and I manage the staff of writers.

When was your earliest recollection of becoming interested in baseball?

I’ve loved baseball for as long as I can remember. It was the only sport I played my whole life. I played from tee-ball, all the way until I was in my early 20’s. It was all I cared about when I was little and obviously that hasn’t changed much.

How old were you when you attended your first Sox game and what kind of impression did that leave on you?

It was July of 1997 against the Florida Marlins. They went on to win the World Series that year, so not a bad first opponent to see, either. I was eight years old, and I just remember being in awe of how huge the Green Monster was in real life. I had seen it on TV a million times, but you don’t really realize how big it is until you see it in person. And when you’re a little kid, everything seems ten times bigger than it actually is. I became addicted to the atmosphere and I’ve been going back for my fix ever since.

What inspired you to start Soxspace and how did it evolve over time?

It all happened by chance. I had a MySpace decked out in Red Sox pictures, and I got a message from a guy who had a MySpace page with a couple thousand “friends” and they were all Red Sox fans. He said he didn’t have the time to do anything with it and that he thought I would do a better job with it. I changed the name of the page to SoxSpace, applied my makeshift HTML skills to decorate it a little bit and started writing original blogs, and it took off. We went from around 2,000 friends when I took it over to over 100,000 in two years.

When MySpace started going downhill, I didn’t want the ride to be over, so I made a deal with Sully’s Brand that if they designed me a website that I would give them free advertising. That’s how the first site came to be. Then a few years later, I got picked up by the New England Baseball Journal, but I hated that. I can be Jared and write for print or another online media outlet with no issues, but I didn’t like being SoxSpace and having to answer to someone. If I don’t have complete creative control over SoxSpace then it’s not SoxSpace. After a year of hosting SoxSpace with Sports Reel Boston in 2013, I decided to launch SoxSpace independently again, and I launched SoxSpaceBoston.com in February.

Describe the experience attending the Sox World Series clinching game and the roller coaster surrounding the team from the year prior?

It was one of the most emotional nights of my life. I honestly felt like I was living in a movie that night. It’s one of those things that you always hope and dream that you’ll get to be a part of, but you never actually think it will happen. I obviously put my experience that night into greater detail on SoxSpace later that night, but it was just a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget and always appreciate.

Talk about the relaunch of Soxspace and why you took a break from it for awhile?

The relaunch of SoxSpace has been a dream come true for me. A lot of fan blogs that started out on MySpace went down with the ship, so to still be doing this in 2014 is an accomplishment in its own right. But I am extremely proud of what we’ve come up with for a new website this time around. And this is also the first time that SoxSpace will be operating with a full staff of writers. I must admit, it is a little weird for me right now to see someone other than me be saying, “Check out my post on SoxSpace,” but it is a welcomed change.

I walked away from the whole writing thing for a little bit because I had to reprioritize things. When I started SoxSpace at the age of 16, I kind of put all of my eggs into one basket. I was going to write for a living, and there was no Plan B. But around the time that I turned 24, I realized that it wasn’t a lifestyle that I wanted to live. A lot of these big-name writers are on the road and away from their families for significant periods of time and living in and out of hotels, living off of airport food, and that’s just not the life I wanted to live. I was also extremely bitter because of the way that I was treated by several people within the industry and thought it would be best to step away for a little while and finish college.

What kinds of music (artists & genres) do you listen to on a regular basis?

I was actually just talking about this today, how ridiculously random my taste in music is. I am a huge, huge, huge Pink Floyd and Beatles fan. I’ve seen Roger Waters twice, and I’ve seen both Australian Pink Floyd and Brit Floyd in concert. I love John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Johnny Cash, Metallica, Oasis, and Yellowcard. As far as the local music scene goes, I love Mojo Kick, and the Red Star Super Giant EP has been in my car’s CD player for months.

If you were up at bat in a Sox game, what would your walk up song be?

This is a great question, and the answer changes all the time. As of right this second, I would have to say that my walk-up song would be “Special Op” by Jim Johnston. I’m a huge WWE fan, and that’s the entrance team for a faction by the name of The Shield. Gets me amped up.

Where can everyone check out your articles and contact you via social media?

All of my articles can be found at SoxSpaceBoston.com, and I’m on Twitter @Jared_Carrabis and on Facebook at Facebook.com/SoxSpace

Lastly, how big of a role has music and/or sports had in your development as a person today?

I’d be nothing without both of those things. Depending on what you like, music is just one of those things that make you feel so alive. There is absolutely nothing like going to see your favorite band play your favorite album live. Now, for me, there is nothing like seeing your favorite artist play your favorite song in your favorite place in the world, and that’s what I got to experience when I saw Paul McCartney at Fenway Park. So I guess there’s your cross between the two. As far as sports goes, that was how you made friends. Your friends were your teammates. Beyond that, sports have given me something to be passionate about. I think everyone needs something to be passionate about, and sports and music are it for me.

Thanks once again to my friend Jared Carrabis for taking some time out of his busy schedule to do this interview. I've had the opportunity and pleasure of meeting him in person at a couple of Red Star Super Giant shows, and he is probably the most driven, dedicated, and passionate individual I've ever met. His relentless pursuit of maintaining his writing career and transforming it into something that goes way beyond the confines of anything he's ever imagined has inspired me and countless others. Definitely take the time to check out Jared's site and his social media links as they were mentioned above.

Charlie and the Foxtrots Release Music Video For "The Man I Am"

Nashville based Charlie and the Foxtrots just released their music video for "The Man I Am". The video was filmed down south in Toomsboro, Georgia and is a fresh, Southern cooked gem with the band performing smack dab on the front porch of a house completely evoking the style and substance that the group wishes to evoke to its listeners. The song itself is a masterpiece with each musician in the band contributing a great deal to the overall success of the group, and creating a track that its listeners will closely identify with and become that career hallmark that people will recognize and say "I remember where I was when I first heard this song." This track is that real and authentic, and I'm so proud that I stumbled across this group that I have high hopes for moving forward.

Brooklyn based artist Marco Argiro has just released a terrific 7-minute clip for "Will You Remember Poison Heart?" under the moniker of his band Marco With Love. The clip takes us on a journey throughout the streets and subways of NYC with a terrific rocker that sees Marco evoking the image of some terrific musicians and luminaries to come out of New York including The Ramones and Julian Casablancas of The Strokes fame with his style and image being conveyed to some extent in Marco's appearance as he travels throughout his native city expressing his earnest musical desires in this very intriguing and well put together visual odyssey coming to fruition right here.

Artist Spotlight: The Wild Family

Heading into the weekend with a brand new edition of Artist Spotlight rearing to go! Today, we head over to the Windy City of Chicago, IL where we stumble across the sounds of The Wild Family. The band consists of brothers Jake and Zack Schweitzer, Graham Young, and Kevin Koreman. The band's sound is a melodic blend of folk rock conjured upon a strong lyrical framework that is a mixture of Fleet Foxes and The Avett Brothers with a strong musical state of mind vividly displayed upfront for all to marvel over and be raptured into at the same time. I came across these guys when I caught their Audiotree performance, and I was mesmerized by their stage presence and their ability to weave strong lyrical poetry within their music and make you feel like you're actually playing the role within the song of what is being sung, something that is almost a rarity in this day of age. A terrific unsigned act that is deserving of some love and praise right here in Boston. Some tracks to familiarize yourselves with include "White Shirt" and "Gold".

For more information on The Wild Family, head on over to their Facebook page located here to see and hear for yourself what they've got going on. You can follow the group on Twitter as well right here and stay in touch directly with the gentlemen on a one-on-one basis. Artist Spotlight: Sugar Bomb

Starting off your Thursday with another edition of Artist Spotlight! Today, we get in touch with a local Boston band currently located in Brooklyn that goes by the name of Sugar Bomb. The band consists of Kat Hamilton on lead vocals, Emmett Ceglia on drums, and Marshall Beiver on guitars. The band has a down and dirty, no holds barred punk rock essence that is similar to The Distillers and a hint of Paramore with their own unique identity and individual personalities that set them apart immensely from the other on the rise acts looking to make it in the scene. You may remember them from my post the other day promoting the release of their upcoming single "Kiss Me", and I can definitely say that they have an awesome vibe and musical chemistry going to them that it's almost impossible to ignore. One thing I love about the band is each member's sole personality contributes greatly to the overall success of the group as a whole: Kat plays the part of the badass frontwoman extremely well with a bubbly, out there personality that is just plain charming, Emmett takes the role of the shirtless drummer with a sexy, suave edge to him that will arouse the attention of those in attendance with his sweaty bod glistening from the stage, and then there's Marshall who takes the reigns on guitar and represents as the band's primary musical linguistics master expressing their sound to the audience. A terrific unsigned act that is showing that their time is now.

For more information on Sugar Bomb, head on over to their Facebook page here and give it a 'Like' so that you can stay in the know and connect with their world. The band is on Twitter also from this location here and see when they'll be stopping by the Boston area soon for a show. Check out their official website right here for more in depth information regarding the band, and check out their Bandcamp site over here for all of their music as it's being released.

Kansas City Royals Player Music Roundup

Back with the 2nd installment of my ongoing MLB Player Music special! Today, we take a look at a team hailing from the Midwest that is slowly start to creep back into the upper rankings of the AL Central, the Kansas City Royals. The Royals had a strong start last year, finishing with a 86-76 record, clinching their first winning season since 1994. Anchored by a strong crop of newcomers including the red hot Eric Hosmer, the Royals are aiming to get into the playoffs and put their best foot forward to take what they learned in Spring Training and bring it to the next level. Here is a recap of some of the players and their song choices:

Aaron Crow: Swedish House Mafia - Antidote

Eat crow! This up and coming pitcher has the answer with this high energy electronic track that immediately makes opposing batters feel uncomfortable and a little bit unsure of themselves when they step up to the plate. This newcomer is ready for anything that comes his way with this delectable gem right here.

Alex Gordon: Ted Nugent - Stranglehold

This tune right here was featured in the soundtrack of one of my favorite films of all time, "Dazed and Confused" and is the walk up song choice of this slick fielding left fielder. The song immediately signals certain doom for opposing pitchers, and Gordy has a strong bat that can allow him to spray the ball all ovr the ballpark and deliver in clutch situations when needed.

Billy Butler: Cole Swindell - Chillin' It

This hard hitting DH has a high energy country track from a recent newcomer to the country scene. Billy's only job is to hit, but he delivers when his spot on tjhe lineup comes up and always finds a way to contribute in his team's victory in any way possible and also fills in occasionally at first base, providing for some versatility as well.

Eric Hosmer: Trillville - Some Cut

This scorching hot young up and comer has some Southern fried hip-hop as his walk up music. This much buzzed about first baseman has become the talk of the town down in KC, and has provided for some much needed offense in clutch situations and is my personal favorite player on the team as he evokes all the characteristics of a model player and is a terrific person off the field as well.

Greg Holland: Breaking Benjamin - Fade Away

The young closer has the hard rocking sounds of Breaking Benjamin in his entrance music. Holland was a big part of the Royals success last year, converting 47 of 50 saves and is firmly entrenched in the closer role for some time to come. This song ensures that the opposition will fade away in the end and will carry the Royals off to victory.

James Shields: AWOLnation - Sail

The former Tampa Bay Ray ace has this high energy track that was one of the top songs in 2012, and gives him an added boost when headed out on the mound. Shields has an impressive pitch repetoire that allows him to give players not what they expected, and make them swing out of their shoes and head back to the dugout shaking their heads and sulking in what has transpired thus far.

Luke Hochevar: Eminem- Bagpipes from Baghdad

This set up man has this hip-hop track as his warm up music. The former starter has converted into a reliever role after a disappointing stint as a starter, but he is always looking at improving and seems to be adapting to his reliever role as he will be counted upon in desperate situations where he may be needed to keep his team in the game.

Mike Moustakas: Problem - Like Whaaat

This fan favorite has a loose and limber hip-hop track to warm up to when heading up to the plate. When he steps in the batters box, the fans chant "Mooooose" which sounds like they're booing him but is definitely not the case as he has prvoided for some clutch at-bats when needed and has made some leaping grabs to perserve the game and make the fans happy.

Wade Davis: Shinedown - Begin Again

Another former Ray has exceptional music taste with this Southern fried rock track. Wade has brought some strong starting depth and versatility in the lineup and has helped his team deliver with pitching deep into ballgames, and passes the torch to the excellent core of relievers that can handle almost anything that is thrown their way.

The Royals are knocking on the doorstep in the AL Central this year, I have nothing but high hopes for them going into this year and I was a little bummed that they didn't get into the postseason as I was rooting for them hard to make it and cause some damage heading in. They clearly have all the pieces in place, now it's time for them to show everyone that it's their time.

PawnShop kings - PawnShop kings EP

SoCal natives PawnShop kings have arrived with their brand-new self-titled EP. The 5 disc collection is a welcoming mixture of down home folk sensibilities mixed in with a slight inspirational aesthetic that is subtly reflected in the lyrics, and gives those listening an idea of where these musicians come from and how their upbringing is reflected in their music.

We start things off with "Love Like Jesus", a rapturous, driven tune with a strong musical state of mind that shows everyone who Scott & Joel Owen are, two brothers who have a passion for what they believe in but don't force it down people's throats and express their sensibilities through the power of music. "Gonna Let You" is a pure, unadulterated folk tune with a strong lyrical framework built into the mainframe that allows the instrumentation to come out freely and is not forced out by any means and lets it do its own thing naturally. "Fall Apart" is my favorite song off the effort that features Scott & Joel's vocals working their magic yet again, but this time at a much higher level than the prior two tracks and with a stronger musical connection that allows you to be honed in with what they're feeling at the same time the instruments are being played, and gives you an immediate vision of what these guys really are like and how their musical kinship has evolved over the years. We begin to wrap things up with "When You're Holding Me", a downtempo, piano laden tune that showcases a different side of the duo that we haven't had the opportunity to experience much on this record, and works to a great degree here with the soft laced melodies working their way in quite well with Joel & Scott's tremendous vocal ranges. "Make Me Whole" concludes matters here with a soft, harmonic number featuring Joel & Scott's vocal abilities once again proving their mettle as they've done all throughout the record and gives folks a chance to retrace their steps from earlier in the record, and see what different musical soundscapes we've encountered in our journey home.

In conclusion, a decent effort from PawnShop kings, a group that are much more than just a Christian group if you listen closely, they are two brothers who thoroughly enjoy what they do for a living, and that is making honest and heartfelt music.

                                                                                                                               EP Score: 3/5

Track Listing:

  1. Love Like Jesus
  2. Gonna Let You
  3. Fall Apart
  4. When You're Holding Me
  5. Make Me Whole

Liz Lawrence Releases Music Video For "Health & Safety"

Burgeoning U.K. singer-songwriter Liz Lawrence has just released her music video for "Health & Safety" from her forthcoming EP due out later on this year. The inventive clip features a compilation of random clips interspersed throughout that provides for a thorough and enjoyable viewing experience that coincides well with the laid-back and serene nature of her song,  and has that unsung characteristic to it that sets it apart quickly from the others and puts it on a pedestal all its own. Definitely one of the most enjoyable tracks of the year thus far, and Liz is one artist to keep an eye out throughout the year.

Sugar Bomb To Release New Single "Kiss Me" on March 4th

Boston's own Sugar Bomb are gearing up to release their brand new single titled "Kiss Me" on March 4th. The band is currently based in Brooklyn but calls Boston their homeland, and their new song is an infectious, groove laden affair with a non-stop punk edge to them that gives them attitude and a certain name cache amongst concertgoers who will fall for them almost instantaneously and their infectious tunes. I really enjoyed the new track, as it evokes the musical characteristics that they've meticulously set out to mold while in the studio creating this song and all their other outstanding jams. What is even more important is that they have a local connection which seals the deal on them and immediately has me tuned in.

For those living in the NYC area, they will be performing a show at Arlene's Grocery the night of the single's release on 3/4 so make it your mission to attend the show that night, regardless of the weather conditions which will not halt your mission to see this incredible on the rise act.

Artist Spotlight: Rust Belt Lights

Starting off another week with a brand new edition of Artist Spotlight! Today, we head to Buffalo, NY birthplace of the wings where we come across the ever vibrant sounds of Rust Belt Lights. The band consists of Zach Dietsch on lead vocals, Pat McAndrew on guitar, Cody K. on bass, Tom Mayer on guitar, and Brochure on drums. The band's sound is reminiscent of the DIY movement that I grew up listening to high school, with elements of Brand New and Taking Back Sunday thrown in for good measure to balance the sound out and accentuate the high energy vocals that are present at every turn throughout their music. I found out about them through their recent performance through Audiotree, which has become my go-to source in finding the newest acts that are popping up outside the region, and it has given me a great barometer as to the depth of talent that is just outside the doorstep, and these guys are a perfect example of that diamond in the rough and have that extra spark that sets them apart from the other acts currently entrenched in the scene right now. A terrific up and coming act that is worthy of a spot here on the site. Some recommended tracks to have a listen at include "Haters Get Hated" and "With No Hesitation".

For more information on Rust Belt Lights, head on over to their Facebook page located here and give them a 'Like' to show your appreciation for their music and all that they do. Give the band a follow on Twitter over here and stay in touch with the guys directly to see when they may be stopping by your area sometime. Head on over to their Bandcamp site right here to listen to all of their music that they have released thus far.

Product Review: Sonos Play:1 Wireless Speaker System

The Play: 1 system is Sonos' newest and most affordable speaker. The set delivers crystal clear sound at an affordable price, without risking space in your house to put the speakers, or your wallet for that matter.

The speakers are slightly larger than I imagined, easily towering over my old Jam wireless speaker that I used on a regular basis. The set up for the speakers was a breeze, and had a handy locking mechanism for the power cord that prevents tangling and allow you to tuck the cords behind tables or other furniture, just allowing you to see the speaker itself plain and simple as intended without having to look at cords sticking out all over the place. The speaker works seamlessly via the Sonos Controller app available for iPhone, Android, and a host of other mobile operating platforms that fulfills the musical needs of all junkies out there who are constantly roaming around and want to control music wherever they are. Music can be controlled via a host of services, including iTunes, Spotify, Rhapsody, Napster, and the new Beats Music service, which is what I used to play music on this device. One thing I enjoyed about the device was the ability to add songs to the queue and adjust the order you want the songs to play, allowing you to play the tracks in any order you choose and skip over the ones you want to come back to later.

The sound on this speaker was purely sublime, delivering a crystal clear, streamlined sound that filled the entire room. It also allowed me to control music from two different zones in the house, I had one set up in the dining room and the other in my bedroom, and I could control songs from different endpoints in the house, creating a custom level of musical satisfaction and giving the power of choice right in my fingertips. One thing I would've liked from this device that I've seen from others is the portability function and internal battery. While this device is intended for use inside your house, I like the option of listening outside and the ease of use function without being confined to cords or worrying about a deluge of water suddenly converging overhead and having to unplug and cover your speaker before it gets ruined.

All in all, the Sonos Play: 1 is a formidable choice in the ever expanding wireless speaker arena, and delivers a high quality sound with the ease of use and the ability to listen to music from any source imaginable. A terrific choice for unwinding in your place and controlling the music wherever you are.

                                                                                                                                Product Score: 4/5

Oakland Athletics Player Music Overview

Starting off a recurring weekly featured heading into the upcoming baseball season. Over the course of the next few weeks beginning with Spring Training, we're going to take a look at some teams around the league and see what the players individual music tastes are like, allowing us to get a sense of what their personalities are like both on and off the field.

Today, we start off and take a look at a team that personifies character and individuality, the Oakland Athletics. The team won the AL West last year for the 2nd year in a row, but lost in the 1st round of the playoffs again to the Detroit Tigers and are looking to have a strong finish and a long and fruitful run deep into the postseason. I've always been a deep admirer of the A's and their ability to finish strong in the regular season and get into the playoffs despite having one of the smallest payrolls in the league, they totally evoke the qualities of a model franchise and one that I have a great deal of respect and admiration for year in and year out. Here is a rundown of some of the players and their individual walk up songs:

AJ Griffin:  Wolfgang Gartner - Illmerica

The starting pitcher has some high energy house music ready for him to put on full blast when charges out to the mound. It's very different than the usual genres of some of the players from other teams who traditionally choose something like rock, pop, country, hip-hop, but AJ is in a class all his own and he delivers with this funky number here.
Brandon Moss:  Eric Church - Homeboy

The former Red Sox pays homage to his Southern roots with some country music courtesy of Eric Church. While the music may be a little offbeat in the clubhouse, the whole team chemistry of the A's is built upon being a little different and doing things against the grain from what others expect you to be like. And this song totally reflects the elements that he calls home.

Coco Crisp: Kid Ink - Badass

Another former Sox player bringing up the rear with some hip-hop style to add to the mix. The slick fielding center fielder is a hot commodity over in the Bay Area these days with his massive fro and free wheeling personality turning heads and attracting legions of devotees in the process as well. What better way to express his personality than this nugget right here.

Derek Norris: Soundgarden - Outshined

The highly skilled backstop has some classic grunge rock courtesy of Soundgarden to help him unwind when he goes up to the plate. A strong choice for a walk up song, the high energy riffs will make opposing pitcher shake in their shoes a little bit and could give Norris an advantage as a ball comes right down in the heart of the plate.

Eric Sogard: Guns N Roses - Welcome to The Jungle

Nerd power! The strong fielding second baseman has a very popular song choice for his walk up song in Guns N' Roses. The only player in MLB to wear glasses, this player has captured the attention of fans alike with his unique style and sensibility making fans create signs showing support for this optically enhanced player.

Jarrod Parker: Red - Breathe Into Me

The young starting pitcher has some Christian music influenced in his walk-up song that gives him an advantage when facing opposing hitters. A newcomer on the scene, Parker has greatly increased his presence as a front line starter and while he had a bit of a slow start last season, he is ready to catch on and move straight ahead with this blazing track.

Josh Reddick: Ryback (Jim Johnston WWE) - Meat On The Table

Another former Red Sox player brings his unique and flashing sensibilities (and an awesome beard to boot) with this wrestling theme used by Jim Johnston of the WWE. While his presence here in Boston is greatly missed, the right fielder is building quite the following in Oakland that has inspired fans to create signs featuring championship belts proclaiming him, "The Champ", and he certainly is with this song choice.

Ryan Cook: Breaking Benjamin - So Cold

This oldie but goodie from Breaking Benjamin is Ryan Cook's song choice that gives him an intense edge and something to look forward to when he steps out on the mound. Usually pitchers depend on an intense and uptempo song to get them into the mood right before first pitch, and this song does the trick and keeps his mind focused on the task at hand.

Sean Doolittle: Metallica - For Whom The Bell Tolls

This classic track from Metallica gives Doolittle an intense and glaring edge that towers over opposing hitters when faced with the difficult challenge of facing Doolittle on the mound. Saving games is an important task, and Doolittle does his job of bridging the gap between the latter innings and giving his team a chance to go home with a well deserved victory all through the power of this song.

Yoenis Cespedes: Clyde Carson - Slow Down (Yoenis Cespedes Remix)

This song from the Bay Area native gives the latest Cuban sensation a chance to prove his worth and test his strength among some of the top talent throughout baseball. A tough out at any point, Yoenis takes his time in finding the pitch he wants, and making the pitcher pay dearly for his sorry mistake that will later be buried somewhere deep in the stands for fans to fight over later.

Keep an eye out for more MLB team music rundowns each week throughout spring training heading into the beginning of the regular season on March 31st. And, I just want to give a special shoutout to Benjamin Christensen, a diehard A's fan year in and year out who is also an accomplished writer himself for his site called Hats and Tats where he writes about his extensive and ever growing collection of hats from MLB teams and minor league affiliates. You can view it right over here and if you ever have the opportunity to meet him in person, ask if you can tug his majestic and ever growing beard!
